California protesters clash before Trump’s rally

Donald Trump’s rhetoric towards immigrants, and Latinos in particular, has brought him success in states with less diverse populations. California, however, is a different story. Not only is the state massive, but it has a strong base of immigrants from Mexican families, not to mention areas very friendly to LGBTQ people. So when Trump showed up to speak at his rallies in the state, he encountered far more resistance than he’s experienced earlier in the campaign.

As Trump planned to speak at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame, protestors got heated. They threw eggs at police and caused enough of a disruption that Trump had to be escorted through the back of the building. In all, five protestors were arrested at the scene. Reporter Rob Reynolds explained, "The protestors here are denouncing Trump as a racist. They are denouncing him for his inflammatory comments about Mexican immigrants and his plan to bar all Muslims from entering the United States."

For his part, Trump seemed to take it well, and even used the situation as an opportunity to reference his inflammatory remarks once again. “That was not the easiest entrance I’ve ever made. My wife called and said there are helicopters following you. And then we went under a fence and though a fence. Oh boy, it felt like I was crossing the border actually." Twenty people were arrested at protests a day earlier for another Trump speech. Needless to say, the state that leans heavily Democratic did not make him feel welcome.
