Cruz’s running mate is Fiorina

It was a bit of a puzzling move: despite being far back in the delegate count and all but knocked out of the running, Ted Cruz announced Carly Fiorina as his running mate. Why make such an announcement? Essentially, Cruz was still in the race at the time and had a vested interest in doing whatever was in his power to win states and take delegates away from Trump. Most recently, this would apply to Indiana where Cruz made his last stand before dropping out.

By announcing a running mate, Cruz would at least get some media attention on himself and away from Trump. Cruz cited a number of reasons for choosing Fiorina: she has business experience from her time at Hewlett-Packard. He also mentioned that she’s level- headed, smart, capable, and has “shattered glass ceilings” as a woman in business.

But did it really matter? The New York Times put it best: “Mr. Cruz’s decision to rush out a vice-presidential pick before next week’s primary in Indiana, which is becoming make-or-break for his candidacy, was the political equivalent of a student pulling a fire alarm to avoid an exam: It was certain to draw attention and carried the possibility of meeting its immediate goal, but seemed unlikely to forestall the eventual reckoning.”

Ultimately, this is just how it played out. Cruz lost Indiana and dropped out making Fiorina’s short-lived Vice Presidential candidacy a bit of a punch line. At the end of the day, it didn’t help either politician and just served as an interesting trivia question for the future.
